Working Mariners May Get Seats On TSAC

Hot off the press: Rep. James Oberstar, chairman of the House Transportation Committee, has introduced new legislation in the Maritime Safety Act of 2009 (H.R. 2652). If passed into law some of this will profoundly effect the towing industry because the bill specifies in very clear language that actively-working towing vessel masters and engineers (from the offshore, Western Rivers/GICW and ship-docking or harbor towing vessel sectors) must be represented on the Towing Safety Advisory Committee. This is a huge step in the right direction and it’s what we’ve been diligently working towards for the last two years. We’re very pleased that congress listened to us and the National Mariners Association. Further analysis will be forthcoming…..
