Behold…..
…..the mighty Cornell. A 1949-vintage, single-screw “relic” railroad tug that many mariners of today would have a great deal of trouble maneuvering light boat, let alone with a barge. Sporting the original colors of her first owner, the Lehigh Valley Railroad, she was built at the Jakobson Shipyard in Oyster Bay on Long Island to move car floats around New York Harbor, and particularly upon the Harlem River.
She is still active today: these photos were taken this summer along the North River on Manhattan’s west side. Click here for the full history and specs on Cornell, which is most certainly old-school in the finest tradition.
