Riding out yet another snow storm, idle barges hunker down in Gowanus. Ahhhh, winter! Looking at it today, it’s hard to imagine that the Gowanus Creek and Bay were once the home of incredibly rich oyster beds. For that matter, so was much of greater New York Harbor. Today it’s a federal Superfund site awaiting “remediation” from many decades and a great variety of human abuses. Those with a taste for history will find Mark Kurlansky’s The Big Oyster: History on the Half Shell a fine read.
